| Task Force Recommendations |
On May 1, 2009, Jonathan Lippman, Chief Judge of the State of New York, announced the creation of the New York State Justice Task Force (the “Task Force”), one of the first permanent task forces to address wrongful convictions in the United States. The purpose of the Task Force is to examine the causes of wrongful convictions and make recommendations for changes to the criminal justice system to safeguard against such convictions in New York State. Chaired by New York Court of Appeals Associate Judge Theodore T. Jones and Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore, the Task Force includes representatives from all participants in the criminal justice system – judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, members of law enforcement, legislators, executive branch officials, forensic experts, victim’s advocates and legal scholars – from across the State.
